Jack’s Story
Jack is now very motivated to move on in life, to learn new skills and act on any advice or support given, he is keen to further enhance his CV by doing voluntary work whilst he waits for his business to take off.

Jack’s Story:

Jack is 30 and lives in Worcester. He has been claiming job seekers allowance for approximately five months and was given his first Probation order at the beginning of July 2012. This was a Community Punishment of 200 hours. Jack was referred by his Probation Officer, and they are hoping that Jack can use 20% of his hours for learning activity.

During the initial assessment it became clear that Jack was keen to set up his own business. He was referred to the Business Start Up Awareness Session run by Business Enterprise Services (BES). Jack attended the first 2 hour session and it confirmed that he was being realistic and added structure to his ideas.

The following week Jack attended the full day Business Start Up Workshop with BES, during this day he built up a business plan and was taught the basics of running a successful business, this included things such as insurance, paying contributions to the tax man and employing others. Since then Jack has worked on a one to one basis with both YSS and BES staff to further progress with his ambitions. This has included the production of leaflets and gathering funding for pieces of equipment.

Jack has also started work on gaining his CSCS card, this will prove essential if Jack needs to work on a building site when his business is up and running. Jack is ready for his CSCS test which he will take in the next few weeks.

Another part of the Flexible Support Funding,  which  supports projects like this,  is that everyone is given 1:1 support. During this time Jack had serious accommodation issues and has received support from our Pathways Accommodation Mentoring Project (PAM).

Jack is very motivated to move on in life, to learn new skills and act on any advice or support given, he is keen to further enhance his CV by doing voluntary work whilst he waits for his business to take off.

Jack says – “This programme and the YSS staff have been a great help. I am truly grateful to them all and think that this project should be made more available to others that need that extra nudge!”
