Robin Walker visits YSS and the Transition to Adulthood project in Worcester, on Friday 11 January 2013

The Transition to Adulthood (T2A) pilot project in West Mercia, funded by Barrow Cadbury,  was visited by Robin Walker MP this week in Worcester. The visit  was arranged by the T2A Alliance and was hosted by Lorraine Preece Director of Operations and Business Development YSS, together with Manjinder Purewal, West Mercia Probation Trust Worcestershire Assistant Chief Officer and Keith Barham, YOS Manager, West Mercia YOS.

David Andrewartha, acting Team Manager YSS,  and members of his team: Alison Steedman and Gabi Hyde with  5 service users  gave the opportunity for the MPs to hear first-hand some of the experiences of the young people we work with.  The young people who attended also had the opportunity (and took it) to put their views on employment, accommodation, training and the difficulties of having a criminal record. One difficulty  discussed was obtaining a bank account, which requires  an accommodation address and proof of identity, both of which can prove problematical for our service users. They were very eloquent and considered in their responses. They also heard from Robin Walker what the role of an MP involves and and the type of things he is currently working on.

Comments from the service users included:
“If it was not for the T2A project then I would have been back in prison. I wanted to do something about improving my life  and they helped me to  reach my goals. I now have my own accommodation”

” My key worker is helping me find accommodation, find a part time training course, and is helping me to learn to budget better “

” I am living at the YMCA, and have the support of my T2A key worker. She has helped me with getting evidence of my identity,( copy of birth certificate) and  sorting out my benefits and a bank account”.

Robin Walker  appreciated the extra value  that this type of service  can bring to a person’s life and was very supportive of the excellent work of YSS in the Voluntary sector in Worcester and across the county.

Friday morning’s visit was a great success, as it was a very positive meeting and has given much food for thought. This will also be reported back to the T2A alliance.
