Very successful fund raising for YSS Worcestershire Young Carers

YSS Worcestershire Young Carers Team Manager, Mary Lewis, receives cheque from Karen Smith, of Holloways

£4567 was raised for 2 charities at  Holloways, Suckley this year.

YSS Worcestershire Young carers  is very grateful for the £2,283 raised at the Christmas 2 day shopping extravaganza at Holloways, Suckley. YSS, together with the  Hope Centre, Bromyard, were the 2 nominated charities this year.

This money will provide  vital funding   for the Young Carers activities fund  ready for 2014.    Already in the new programme is a  trip to  Drayton Manor Theme Park, and  this will help towards  the very expensive transport costs for this trip.  It will also help young carers  go on a Pantomime trip in the New Year.

The summer programme, currently in the planning stage, includes a residential trip, and these are key activities that are hugely enjoyed by young carers. They often say that they do not want to give up their caring  role  but they do want to have breaks and to take part in the activities that they see other young people enjoying.

Referrals to this Young Carers service are at their highest number and potentially will increase further as the number of young carers is increasing nationally, (as revealed in the 2011 census: 19% increase in the number of young carers aged under 18,  83% increase in the number of 5 – 7 year olds providing care, and 25% increase in the number of young adult carers (aged 16-25) – a group that is twice as likely not to be in education, employment and training).

The demand for more activities is greatly helped by funding from such  fund-raising events. If you wish to know more about the service or  how to donate to YSS Worcestershire Young Carers contact or go to our Young Carers pages.
