What a day: fancy dress, fundraising and winning an award in the Good Friends and Carers category of the Tryangle awards

Everyone at the Young Carers project are extremely proud of what Linzi has achieved and really appreciate all of the hard work she put into a recent fund raising event at her college: New College Redditch.

Linzi Aston from Redditch had recently become the Worcestershire Young Carers Champion, following a training course with Young Carers in Focus back in November. She has taken her role very seriously and decided that her first task as Champion would be to organise a fundraising day at her college, North East Worcestershire (NEW) College in Redditch.

Following a planning meeting with young carers and college staff, Linzi decided to organise a fancy dress day, coupled with a cake sale, with all proceeds in aid of the Worcestershire Young Carers project. She managed to talk all of her Social Care class mates to dress up and they all brought in cakes to sell. Worcestershire Young Carers also staffed an information stand as the event managed to take over a huge part of the student lounge for most of the day!

Jo Gill Smith, who works as Targeted Support at NEW College said: “When Linzi suggested an event to raise awareness of Young Carers at college I was only too happy to support her. I work with Linzi in my role as Target Support and know how passionate Linzi is about raising awareness of young people who have to juggle education and caring for someone they love. I met with Linzi along with Neil Phillips from the young carers project and discussed ideas of which Linzi had loads! She decided to go with a sponsored fancy dress and a cake sale  to really try and raise the profile and give back to an organisation so close to her heart. Linzi worked extremely hard to rally the troops, designing posters to display around college and encouraging her classmates to dress up, everyone really stepped up to the mark and looked fantastic on the day. There was an amazing array of cakes which sold extremely well raising a grand total of £209.12. A massive Well Done Linzi.”

However, Linzi’s day got even better when she returned home to find that she had been nominated for, and been awarded a Tryangle award – http://www.wcvys.co.uk/tryangle_awards_2014 – which is run by the Worcestershire council for voluntary youth services. Linzi has won an award in the Good Friends and Carers category and is being recognised for all of the hard work she puts in both at home in her caring role and in her role as Worcestershire Young Carers champion. She is due to attend an event on 25th March where she will be presented with a trophy and a certificate.
