Young Carers Festival – a truly fantastic time

Thanks to the generosity of the fund raising  at a  recent “Review Night” at Arley Kings in Stourport, together with donations from Worcester Music Festival, a group of Young Carers  were able to participate in the dedicated Young Carers Festival.

Our Worcestershire Young Carers at the festival weekend

The National Young Carers Festival ran on the weekend of 27th-29th June and was held at Fairthorne Manor YMCA, near Southampton. Worcestershire Young Carers were lucky enough to attend in what was the festivals 15th year.

A group of 11 young people, along with 2 members of staff drove down to the site on the Friday lunchtime, arriving in glorious sunshine on their own little campsite with pre-pitched tents (except for the staff members who had to bring their own!). They set up camp and decided who was sharing with who before taking a look a the weekends programme of activities. It was a great first night and everyone finally zipped shut their tents and attempted some sleep about 1am!

IMG00039-20140628-1146The following morning, started  with some torrential rain which thankfully only lasted an hour, and breakfast had to be indoors.  The young people had the day to themselves and all got stuck into the fantastic activities on offer such as kayaking, canoeing, climbing, abseiling, zip wires, football tournament, live music, face painting, consultation tent and  cupcake decorating. They managed to meet up for a packed lunch before the whole group raced each other in the canoes – and came very close to tipping into the river on more than one occasion!IMG00038-20140628-1015

More activities followed in the afternoon before a lovely chicken and chips dinner. The last night celebrations were an incredible firework display followed by a disco; accompanied by other live music, Columbia v Uruguay live World Cup football match and the fair ground rides. Every one finally collapsed into their tents around 12.30 again and most were snoring by 12.35!

The following morning was a bit of a lie in compared to the previous day with the morning to enjoy the activities again. There was some tidying up to do and the tents had to be delivered back to the organisers before loading the minibus and headed back to Worcester, exhausted but having had a truly fantastic time!
