Young Carers: Looking After Mum: A Children in Need Special : BBC One at 10:35pm on Wednesday 12th November 2014.Look out for this very special one hour documentary. ( Please note that the film is on post watershed and as such contains challenging issues including potential suicide.)
Children in need Supported by children in need
Pudsey said: “Over the course of several months these young carers, three of whom attend BBC Children in Need projects, allowed cameras to follow them and their families as they deal with situations most adults would struggle to cope with. All four look after mothers who need continual care, from a life-threatening condition to mental health problems and blindness. What unites them is their deeply engrained sense of responsibility and an unbreakable bond with their mother. They all have to find a way to balance their caring roles with the need to still have and enjoy a childhood.”

YSS were not involved in the making of the documentary but the stories told , will, I am sure, resonate with our young carers experiences. Many young carers remain hidden from view, YSS are currently supporting just under 300 young carers in Worcestershire but the 2011 census results showed there to be 3490 self identified young carers in the county. Young carers can be amongst the most vulnerable and at risk groups of young people.

YSS received a 3 year grant in 2013 from Children in Year for a participation project to give our young carers in Worcestershire a voice.
