Linzi outside the Oxo Tower in London

Linzi, our Young Carers Champion,  has been  working with the Childrens Society earlier in the year,     undertaking a  photo shoot and   sending  in a case study written by herself.    This was for the Young Carers in Focus  Portrait  Exhibition at the Oxo Tower in London. Although  disappointed that her  photo was not used in the final exhibition  itself, she was delighted to be  featured in the  exhibition brochure.

In the brochure  Linzi said:

  • ” Young carers  are not easily  identified…”
  • “We don’t look any different  to other young people so  our caring role gets hidden away. No matter  what age, we all stress  about  pretty much  anything and everything, the list is endless. My college attendance is low because I worry  about leaving Mum”
  • ” If any one who is an inspiration to me it si my Mum- she taught me whenever life gets  tough there is always  light at the end of the tunnel and things will be alright”

Linzi and her mother  enjoyed a   very special  day trip to London to see the   exhibition  and  here are some of her comments :

  • “Lovely but cold!”
  • “Exhibition was tiny picked you up a brochure! The exhibition made young carers roles look all doom and gloom! But apart from that was lovely! They want the exhibition to go on tour”
  • “3 celebrities were up there” (their pictures/stories displayed)
  • “managed to do some shopping as well”
  • ‘”Loved it! the smiles from her face (mum) was the best part, apart from being shattered and being in pain the last couple of hours she really enjoyed it”

Exhibition front cover

Hidden tells the story of some of the 166,000 young carers in England, through a collection of compelling portraits, captured by award-winning photographer and former young carer Max Alexander.

Part of The Big Lottery funded Young Carers in Focus programme (YCiF), the exhibition, led by The Children’s Society, explores the challenges young carers face, as well as capturing their resilience, determination and dreams for the future.

The exhibition provides a rare and compelling insight into the responsibility of providing physical, emotional and practical care for a loved one, highlighting the pressure on a person’s well-being and education.

YCiF will be supporting young carers themselves to help curate the exhibition.
