Amazing young carers conference, with HRH The Princess Royal

young carers group On Monday 20th April, YSS Worcestershire Young Carers held their annual conference at drp’s studio in Hartlebury. The day-long conference has been organised by YSS Worcestershire Young Carers themselves, with support from the Hartlebury-based communications agency, drp.  Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, attended the conference as patron of YSS and addressed the delegates keen to learn how best to support young people who regularly care for a family member who is physically or mentally ill, disabled or who misuses substances. The event also launched the county’s new, Young Carers in Schools programme.

Many of the young carers told their own personal stories of how they strive through life both juggling home life responsibilities whilst attending school. Mark Marshall is a 15 year old young carer who has looked after his mother since the passing of his father 8 years ago, talked about the YSS conference and how the charity has helped and supported him, “It was an honour to meet Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal today. She was extremely pleasant and really down to earth. It’s been such good fun organising the conference, and helping to promote the work YSS and the volunteers do for us carers.” The volunteers  undertake a wide range of roles including supporting clubs, activities and fundraising.

hrh cLady Susanna McFarlane Chair of YSS Trustees, talked about the positive impact the YSS Patron provides for the charity “ The Princess Royal has been our patron since 2008 so for over 7 years. We’ve been lucky enough to have had 5 visits from her during that time. She has a keen interest in YSS and her attention to detail and in depth knowledge is paramount to the success we have gained through her support and attendance at our conference today. She helps us to have our voice heard and punch above our weight. At every event she has attended, her presence has generated significant publicity in the local media, increased out profile and there for awareness of the issues we are trying to address.  It opens so many doors to us and the young carers are overjoyed to have had her at this event that they themselves have executed so beautifully.”
