Emily volunteering at YSS Job Club

Testimony from a  recent volunteer in Worcestershire- and how volunteering has led to employment  at HMP Hewell:

Emily  commented ” Volunteering with YSS has, without doubt, been extremely beneficial in me finally securing paid work in a sector that has always interested me. It enabled me to gain valuable skills and experiences; allowing my confidence to grow. It was fantastic to be able to attend an interview confidently and impress recruiters with experience and passion. My role at Job Club, assisting and motivating service users to find employment and training opportunities, was key to my recent recruitment in a prison library. It is hoped that I will be able to continue to use the knowledge and skills that I have gained at YSS to deliver a similar service within the prison. Volunteering looks great on a C.V.; it demonstrates your dedication to having a positive impact on the community. YSS offer volunteer roles with superb training opportunities and a welcoming team. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with them and hope to keep in touch.”

Mark Steadman YSS senior key worker said “For over 18 months Emily has been a volunteer with the criminal justice team at YSS Carden Street attending our weekly job club, assisting our clients with CV production, disclosure of convictions, interview techniques and general advice and guidance. She has recently secured a job working at HMP Hewell in the library, she has written this short article for our web site to try and help encourage other people to volunteer. We have sadly lost Emily but its great to know that with the support and experience she has gained from us she has been able to secure the job she wanted.”

YSS are looking to recruit and train volunteer mentors across Shropshire and Telford for its new Through The Gate Mentoring Service. This new mentoring service aims to encourage full integration back into the local community, prevent social exclusion, reduce re-offending and assist in rehabilitation.
