“It is amazing how little it can take to make a massive difference to someone else’s life” from a YSS volunteer

Tom shares his experience   as a volunteer with the YSS and his motivations:.

“I started out looking to just gain administration experience with the YSS, but in my interview I learnt about the mentoring projects running with the YSS and accepted an invitation to the forthcoming mentor training course.

After completing this I went along to see one of the new projects in action at Carden St, The Employment Support Programme and I have been volunteering on this project ever since. The programme is run to help ex-offenders currently seeking employment; this includes providing them with work tasters, a job club, workshops, and guest speakers from other organisations.

From the first day I was hooked, seeing clients’ confidence improve by just listening to them, helping them work towards their goals or working with them on something as simple as a CV, I had never done anything more fulfilling.

It is amazing how little it can take to make a massive difference to someone else’s life. And not only are you helping others but you gain a great deal yourself, there is always an opportunity to learn new skills or a course being offered which are invaluable, I myself have managed to use these to start retraining in teaching.

I could not recommend it enough, getting the chance to employ your skills to help others that are vulnerable, learning new ones yourself and meeting some excellent people that are keen to make a positive difference to people’s lives, it has surely been one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had.”
