On 18th and 19th July six trainee EnHance mentors attended our mentor induction training course held at Sunflower House, Sure Start Centre in Shrewsbury. We were also delighted to welcome two volunteers who will be mentoring young people attending Tenby High School.

Our EnHance trainers Alison Kinrade and Vicky Campbell received some really positive feedback; one trainee said…

“It was enjoyable, very informative and well delivered. As a fairly well qualified trainer I had difficulty in finding any faults. As someone who sat on a national working party regarding interview technique models for the Police and determining same I could not fault the trainers over the weekend. They were great. Don’t hesitate to use them again.”

This two day training course is part of our volunteer recruitment process and is mandatory to attend. It’s an interactive training course with lots of participation and we know, from the feedback we receive, that volunteers find it interesting, informative and increases confidence and knowledge to support a young person/family as a volunteer mentor. We aim for a relaxed, friendly and respectful environment where everyone feels able to contribute.

The course covers:

  • – What it means to be a mentor – general mentoring skills based on accredited mentoring training.
  • – Enhance overview – the aims of the service and how it fits within Early Help and including case studies of families and young people.
  • – Safeguarding – including case studies of safeguarding concerns and how to report a concern
  • – Confidentiality and Data Protection
  • – Listening Skills
  • – Lone Working/Health and Safety
  • – Project paperwork
  • – Values and Attitudes and  the impact of our own and those of others on families and young people
  • – Introduction to Motivational Interviewing – The Cycle of Change – how to support someone to identify changes and enable them to make those changes
  • – Role plays with typical EnHance scenarios

We are grateful to Julie Duncan, Children’s Centres Team Manager,  Shropshire Council, Children’s Services, Early Help for her kind co-operation in allowing us to use Sunflower House for training at weekends. This is a spacious, well equipped venue for us to use and goes a long way to making the training experience a positive, smooth running for participants and trainers alike and a great example of partnership working.
