A group of 7 young carers spent 5th August at the New Road Cricket Ground, home of Worcester Rapids cricket team, all thanks to Worcester City MP Robin Walker, who kindly donated the tickets through contact with Royal London, who sponsor the league. It started off as an overcast day and nobody was sure how much cricket would be played as it seemed that rain was imminent! The rain held off for the start as everyone took their seats to watch Worcestershire bat first against a strong Gloucestershire team. They started well but unfortunately the rain couldn’t be held off much longer and we had to find cover under the stands. This was fortunately the only delay, and after half an hour the match was back under way.

Most of the group had never watched a cricket match before so had lots of questions, eager to learn the rules, and everyone was really getting into the match. Worcestershire finished their innings with a flurry and exciting young batsmen Joe Clarke , scored 130 not out. The hot prospect hit a few sixes to bring up a good total for the home side. During the break the cricket club allow fans onto the pitch so the young carers were very keen to climb over the fence and pose for a few photos.

After a half hour break Gloucestershire came out to bat. Unfortunately they began hitting the ball all over the place and it soon became obvious they were likely to come out on top in the match. However, the young carers did manage to get some autographs from the fielding Worcestershire players, including high scoring Clarke. Overall it was an entertaining day and several of the young carers agreed:-

  • “If you watch the game properly it’s really exciting – can we come again
  • “It was really good thank you!”

YSS Worcestershire Young Carers Keyworker Neil, said:-

  • “The weather was doing its best to make it feel like autumn rather than the height of summer, but we still had a really good time and even though Worcestershire lost I think we have some newly converted cricket fans!”
