EnHance Team Talk Online Safety for Young People
Being 'Cyber Smart' is a high priority for organisations working with young people. West Mercia Police are currently running a '#BeCyberSmart' campaign.

Online safety is a concern in the digital age. Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police have launched the #Be Cyber Smart campaign to raise awareness of internet-related crime and to give people the knowledge they need to stay safe online.

The EnHance team have been discussing some of the issues concerning the online safety of young people, and sharing their experiences of dealing with these issues. Some examples of concern were:

  • – Sharing an intimate photograph
  • – Age misrepresentation
  • – 14 yr old female being groomed by older males – sending photos of herself  online
  • – Chatting while on common gaming site
  • – 8 yr old seen a horrible face online – very scared
  • – Inappropriate site seen at friend’s house

Oswestry Team

Some examples of what YSS EnHance staff did to combat these issues were:

  • – Reporting through CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection)
  • – Discussed boundaries at home
  • – Problem solving skills to avoid peer pressure
  • – Reported to police
  • – Reported to school/ Partnership work with school
  • – Used a volunteer mentor to do protective behaviours programme with young person
  • – Completed child sexual exploitation toolkit to assess risk
  • – Raised awareness through CEOP website and session on online safety with young person and family
  • – Spoke to parents, they spoke to friend’s parents
  • – Gave out leaflets on online safety

Some examples of what was achieved with the young persons were:

  • – Able to keep themselves safe by talking about it
  • – Increased  awareness of internet safety/ grooming
  • – Reduced risks of re occurrence
  • – School agreed to  do sex education and internet safety with class
  • – Greater understanding of risks and consequences

Some examples of what was achieved with families were:

  • – Parental controls in place
  • – Heightened  awareness/ more knowledge of  internet  abuse
  • – Provided “containment”
  • – Increased knowledge and awareness of internet risks/alerted parents to the dangers
  • – Parents took action along with other parents in their community

Market Drayton Team

Some examples of training received by YSS EnHance project staff on this topic:

  • – Researched Shropshire Safeguarding Children Board (SSCB) site resources and information.
  • – Participated in and completed online training.
  • – Looked at  CEOP site  for new videos and information.
  • – Issued articles on Sexting to all EnHance team.
