Sun, Sea and Banksy

Worcestershire Young Carers- very special sea side trip

“The best thing was getting stopped at the start (being frisked by the Dismaland security staff), having selfies with the Dismaland staff, being with Young Carers and having a laugh”.

YSS Worcestershire Young Carers visited Weston-Super-Mare on Wednesday 27th August for the last of their seaside trips during the summer programme, thanks to donations  received from their many supporters.

Keyworkers Sue Eltagouri and Vicky Parker accompanied 8 adult young carers for the action packed day, including a once in a lifetime opportunity to visit artist Banksy’s ‘Dismaland Bemusement Park’ on the seafront.

After queuing for what seemed like hours, the young adult carers were greeted by rather sullen park staff and frisked by airport style security guards as they went in, much to everyone’s amusement! The young adult carers were treated to artwork displayed by over 50 artists worldwide including ‘Cinderella’s Castle’, ‘Mini Gulf’ and ‘Water Cannon Creek’. The theme for the amusement park was to be miserable and the adult young carers had a truly dismal time!

Feedback from Young Carers:

  • Lauren, aged 20 – “The best thing about the day was Dismaland. Banksy is a good bean!”
  • Meg aged 17 – “The best thing was getting stopped at the start (being frisked by the Dismaland security staff), having selfies with the Dismaland staff, being with Young Carers and having a laugh”.
  • Matt, aged 15 – “Dismaland was the best and trying to make the staff laugh”.

Following the visit to ‘Dismaland’ they stopped for a much needed lunch break on the seafront. Some of the young adult carers treated themselves to fish and chips, much to the delight of the local seagulls, which were keeping a watchful eye and swooping low like vultures! They then visited the pier briefly followed by some souvenir shopping. The day absolutely flew by and just before they left, the group had a quick paddle in the sea before walking along the beach, back to the minibus.

Young Carers were again blessed with lovely weather and the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Visiting ‘Dismaland’ was an added bonus!

Vicky Parker, Keyworker commented:

  • “The whole day was just great. The adult young carers and staff were really lucky to visit Banksy’s masterpiece ‘Dismaland’ ,having obtained tickets just the day before following several failed attempts. The whole experience was amazing, hilariously funny whilst being thought provoking. The young carers definitely appreciated the humour and mickey-take of society. Hopefully, memories of this day will stay with them for years to come”.
