WINNERS

The Care Award Winners – Congratulations to all !

24 finalists  attended a glittering awards ceremony at The Berkeley Hotel in London on Thursday 10th March 2016 for the Towergate Care Awards. The event was hosted by comedy actress Sally Phillips, well known for her roles as Bridget Jones’ friend and Tilly from Miranda, to help make the day that little bit more special.

It was  a really special ceremony and a chance for us to thank those who always put others before themselves.

YSS former volunteer, Steve Tallett, won Towergate Insurance Care Awards 2016 Volunteer of Year.

Lorraine Preece , YSS CEO said “We are so thrilled for you, absolutely incredible”.

Steve, from Battenhall, Worcestershire spent most of his career in financial services before retiring five years ago. He then retrained as a counsellor and now works as a volunteer at three centres. He has raised over £2,000 for Diabetes UK through his various long distance runs and will be running for the charity again in the London Marathon this year too !

Steve  told us “I started with YSS in 2006 (through Carole Blake when she was at Worcester Volunteer Service) working with young offenders on the Acclaim and Connect projects. Later on I did my counselling placement through YSS.

I’m now a volunteer counsellor at Worcester Sixth Form College, The Glade Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Worcester, and the Rape and Sexual Violence Project in Birmingham. I’m a non exec director for Spokz People, a CIC based in Birmingham offering support to people with disabilities, and I train mentors for the School of Hard Knocks, a London rugby based charity.

For me, the award is an important recognition of the valuable work done by volunteers, and the wide range of that work.”

Carole Blake, YSS Senior  Volunteer Coordinator  added “Steve Tallett was referred by Worcester Volunteer Centre 10 years ago,  who felt that his strengths and abilities were well matched to YSS projects. I then followed Steve to YSS and became his manager on the volunteer projects!

Steve volunteered on a number of Adult Criminal Justice Mentoring projects working 1:1 out in the community with clients.(and also for a short period become volunteer counsellor with YSS.) Whilst volunteering with YSS,  Steve trained to become a counsellor and also volunteered at the 6th form College Worcester,( which he still does).

Steve is a really good advocate for YSS and is always keen to pass on information or opportunities he comes upon. Many congratulations  to Steve on winning this award.”
