Prisons’ Week, which this year runs between October 9 and 15, has been observed annually for the last four decades, raising awareness of the needs of prisoners and their families, victims of offenders and prison staff. It was planned and supported by representatives of a wide range of Christian denominations and Christian organisations.

This year’s Prisons’ Week service in Worcester Cathedral focused on young offenders. It was  jointly held with local charity YSS, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and which provides community based support services for children, young people, adults and families who are vulnerable, have complex needs and who face difficult life challenges.

YSS staff: Sharon Toy, Debb Grantham, Dave Andrewartha and Jon Cawdron

The Reverend Susie Simpson, Managing Chaplain at a Young Offenders’ Institution in South London,  preached and the readings were read by Tom Currie, Head of Probation Services in West Mercia and Lady McFarlane, Chair of Trustees, YSS.

The service was organised by the diocesan Criminal Justice Affairs Group. Chair of the group, the Revd Charmian Manship said:  “Prisons Week provides an opportunity for members of all faith communities to think about and respond to the needs of all those associated with our criminal justice system. This year we  particularly focused on young offenders and how we can work with charities such as YSS to help them turn their lives around. The service in Worcester Cathedral started a week of prayer and we were pleased  that so  many people  joined us.”
