YSS attend recent GO ON Digital Inclusion conference in Worcester

Earlier this month, YSS staff and volunteers attended the first GO ON Worcestershire conference.

Formed by Worcestershire County Council, in partnership with 29 other organisations, GO ON Worcestershire is a county-wide initiative that aims to promote digital inclusion for all.

  • Specifically, it raises awareness of the groups within society (such as the elderly, low income families or the disabled) who are at significant risk of becoming further socially isolated by the digital age.
  • As more and more public services go online, people with little or no experience of the internet are being forced to embrace a new world that they are extremely fearful of or indeed, are being forced to embrace this world without the appropriate technology to access it.
  • GO ON Worcestershire is working with the county’s social housing providers (Vestia, Rooftop, BDHT and Fortis) and commissioned each of them to employ a Digital Connector whose role was to work with tenants and support their digital needs through arranged group activities.
  • YSS also hosts a Digital Connector with the specific remit of working with criminal justice clients.

Another significant remit of all Digital Connectors was to recruit and train local Digital Champions. Volunteers who would initially better their own digital knowledge and then go on to help others improve theirs.

This GO ON Worcestershire Conference was attended by approximately 120 people including Jon Cawdron (YSS Digital  Connector); Lorraine Preece, (YSS CEO); David Andrewartha (YSS Operations Manager), Neil Phillips (YSS Worcestershire Young Carers  Senior keyworker);  Philip Sherwood (BBO Job Coach)  and Thomas Welch (YSS Volunteer Digital Champion).

The event was held in the week of Safer Internet Day 2017 and aimed to improve attendees’ digital capabilities, confidence and ability to support individuals to gain skills to go online confidently.

The day was hosted by Kate Gallant, the chair of GO ON Worcestershire and comprised of a number of guest speakers and workshops taking the stand. All of the digital connectors were formally involved in helping to facilitate the events throughout the day and they could be spotted by their especially made GO ON Worcestershire T-shirts.

Feedback  included:

  • Neil Phillips said  “ For me, the stand out workshop of the day was EFFECTIVE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA. I took some really useful information from it and look forward to passing this on to our young people.”
  • Jon Cawdron  added “It is great taking responsibility for digital inclusion for YSS and todays conference was the perfect way to celebrate the work that has been taking place across the county.”
