Visit by High Sheriff  of Worcestershire

High Sheriff of Worcestershire, Sir Anthony Winnington, along with his wife, Alexandra,  visited Carden Street on Friday November 13. Along with our Chair of Trustees, Susanna Macfarlane, they toured the centre in order for them to find out more about the work of YSS.

Go on line day- joint work with St Pauls  Hostel Worcester and EnGage

2 IT courses were offered on the same day:  IT for beginners and IT for the more advanced users  as  part of Go on Line day was held  at YSS  IT suite. Students  from all agencies were involved, and  benefitted from  accessing IT, gathering information such as from the NHS on  keeping fit, healthy living and medical information.

Following the  success of the event, Heart of  Worcester College   are now  offering  IT courses  at YSS Carden Sreet, every Tuesday afternoon for St Pauls and YSS clients.

New project starts: ARC- funded  by  West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner: Working across West Mercia

ARC uses workers/mentors to give 121 support to referred 17-24 year olds, in, or at risk of being involved in, the criminal justice system to access community based activities. Many existing local services/activities young people do not know about or feel they can’t be involved in. ARC wants to break down the barriers, real or perceived, that stop young people engaging in positive transport links poor, equipment costs too high or people feel that an activity is not accessible for people “like them”.

Additionally, we aim to  address:

  • Education, training and employment needs, recognising employment as the single most important factor in reducing re-offending
  • Alcohol recognising that many young people link their offending behaviour with alcohol use
  • Emotional wellbeing.

Outcomes we are aiming for include:

  • Community integration
  • Reduction in anti-social behaviour/offending/re-offending
  • Engagement in education, training and employment programmes
  • Addressing harm caused by alcohol
  • Increased confidence and self esteem
  • Improved emotional wellbeing

Successful funding bid  to the Burden Trust

Thank  you to the Burden Trust  for £1500 towards  funding for work placements in our Carden St. Cafe. This has  enabled  clients  to  have taster sessions in the cafe, looking at  food preparation in a commercial cafe environment, as compared to in mass catering. This has been a joint venture with St Paul’s Hostel, Worcester,  and students  are currently  working on a 12 week  placement with  us.  This aims to enhance  opportunities  of gaining  sustainable  employment  or perhaps  access to further education.
